Built circa 1890, Balmichael Farm is typical of the style of Arran farm built in that era. The Old Mill Coffee Shop was the farm's mill, in which they threshed the corn, milled the flour, processed and bagged the 'tatties'. The mill was powered by a waterwheel, which is now turned electronically by a pump, however when it was fully operational, the water that was stored in a dam at the road end, was released, and turned the wheel for about an hour and a half, in which time the work was done.
The Old Mill is now an ambient and tastefully restored family run Coffee Shop. We serve a traditional coffee shop style menu, including our own home baking, freshly home made soups, freshly prepared sandwiches, baguettes, rolls, bagels, pannini and toasties, using a wide range of breads, malted, white, grannary, organic, sun dried tomato, and focaccia. All of our baking is done using the eggs from our free range flock of chickens and ducks. We cater for children, and offer a healthy alternative children's menu, and where possible we use Arran produce. We are able to cater for party's at the coffee shop including Birthdays.
Coach parties are welcome, however we would appreciate if the Driver's or Rep's would telephone us prior to arrival as Balmichael Visitor Centre and the Old Mill Coffee Shop can be an extremely busy place during the main holiday periods.
We sell a wide range of coffees, and hot and cold drinks, we can cover 46 inside, we have comfortable sofas and armchairs in which you can relax, read a paper or a magazine and enjoy a drink and a chat. We also have 18 seats available outside in the courtyard (Easter onwards), and furniture by the waterwheel and tractor tyre sandpit. We also sell our own farm produce of home made Balmichael Farm Jams & Curds, our free range chicken and duck eggs, and we sell locally produced Arran honey.

We now incorporate DD's Pizzas, and are open on Friday evenings from 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm, serving delicious authentic Italian style pizzas and Tapas. Our pizzas are stone baked and made to order, every one hand made with fresh durum wheat and semolina dough.
